When Flags become Climate Data.

Climate change is often communicated through numbers and graphs, which are scientifically accurate, but in many occasions, difficult to interpret and they rarely create an emotional response. Meltdown Flags by Moby Digg, Serviceplan Innovation (Kai West Schlosser, Daniel Kuhnlein) and METER Group, takes a different approach using national flags as a visual language to transform climate data into something people will immediately recognise. The campaign was made to visualize the global melting of glaciers to raise awareness of the exigency.
The project visualizes glacier loss by gradually removing the white areas from the flags of their home countries, giving a visual representation of the ice melting in real time. By using national symbols as indicators of environmental change, allows abstract and difficult climate statistics to be easily understood at a glance.
Instead of creating new graphics, the designers have chosen to work with flags; symbols that already carry cultural, political and historical meaning, and represent identity and belonging. Altering these symbols to visualize real-world glacier data, challenges the meaning of them and becomes visual evidence that national identities and environmental realities are connected.
The reason this works so well is the "simplicity" of the design. By removing a single color from the flag, the system creates an understandable metaphor without the need of explanatory illustrations or dramatic imagery. This also allows viewers to experience the visible transformation of climate change rather than having to interpret them. Hand-sewn flags bring the message to the streets. Meltdown Flags first appeared at COP25 in Madrid in December 2019. Since then, they have become a symbol of protest against climate demonstrations and events around the world.
Alongside the visual identity, the campaign launched an interactive website as well as extending into augmented reality, to allow viewers to explore the disappearing glaciers behind each altered flag. The result of this is a narrative that moves seamlessly between information, interaction, and design, and reinforces the message they are trying to convey.
Another aspect of the project that helps reinforce the message, is the use of typography. The custom typography is built around the same visual principle as with the flags, where it gradually dissolves as glaciers disappear. By applying the same design-system to both the graphics and the typography, the visual identity becomes stronger, making every element communicate and reinforce the same message.
Meltdown Flags demonstrates how graphic design can function as more than communication. By using scientific data and changing them into a recognizable visual language, they have made climate change more tangible, memorable, and in the end, more difficult to ignore.
